SUNRISE Recap: The SSbD24 Conference at Monte Verità

The SSbD24 Conference at Monte Verità (10-15 November 2024) gathered experts from various disciplines to push the boundaries of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD). Through thought-provoking presentations, insightful poster sessions, and dynamic exchanges on potential collaborations, the event highlighted a shared drive to create tangible solutions for a more sustainable future.

The conference featured several key contributions from SUNRISE partners:

  • Sarah Devecchi of Green Decision presented in the “Absolute Sustainability” session, sharing insights on "From Relative to Absolute Life Cycle Assessment within the SSbD Framework: The Case of Advanced and Biobased Materials." Her presentation highlighted the importance of absolute life cycle assessments in driving impactful sustainable innovations.

  • Lisa Pizzol from Green Decision delivered a presentation on "The SUNRISE Module as Part of the SUNSHINE e-Infrastructure," demonstrating the integration of SUNRISE into SUNSHINE's digital framework to enhance the application of SSbD principles.

  • Michael Saidani from the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology presented "Operationalisation of the Safe and Sustainable by Design Framework: Towards an Integrated Sustainable by Design Toolbox." His talk provided an overview of efforts to develop a comprehensive toolbox for implementing SSbD.

The SUNRISE team also actively participated in poster sessions:

Carlos Gomez (EMPA; WP3) presented "Integrating Social Perspectives in SSbD: A Look at Current Methods and Tools," shedding light on the role of social dimensions in SSbD frameworks.

Vicenç Pomar-Portillo (EMPA; WP2) showcased "Methods and Tools to Assess Exposure and Risk for Steps 2-3 of the SSbD Framework for Advanced Materials," focusing on assessing potential risks and exposures in the context of advanced materials.

A significant highlight of the conference was the casual gathering of the four sister projects: SUNRISE, ANALYST, Integrano, INSIGHT SSbD.

These collaborations and discussions always open exciting opportunities for clustering and synergy to maximise their collective impact and accelerate the development of innovative solutions.

The SUNRISE partners were highly engaged throughout the event, contributing through presentations, posters, and discussions. With the momentum generated at Monte Verità, the SUNRISE project and its partners are well-positioned to drive meaningful change and innovation in the field of safe and sustainable design of the advanced materials.
